In 1999, the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame was established by Tony Filippis, Sr. founder of Wright & Filippis, to celebrate the achievements of outstanding athletes and community leaders who have continued to achieve their goals while becoming a symbol of hope and inspiration for generations to come. The mission statement of the Hall of Fame is to honor Michigan's athletes with disabilities who have demonstrated achievement in sports and are positive role models in the community as well as to educate the public about sports for the disabled. The Hall of Fame also strives to provide support for sports and recreation programs for disabled individuals. In addition to an aggressive outreach program comprised of the Adaptive Sports Coalition, the Hall of Fame is continuing to grow in the community by focusing on education, awareness and scholarship programs. New in 2004, The Hall of Fame is currently in the process of developing a mentoring program with our alumni to visit classrooms and deliver motivational speeches as well as demonstrate some of the remarkable sporting equipment available to people with disabilities. We are also in discussions with three major Michigan universities with hopes of developing sports programs and scholarships for young people who hope to continue their athletic dreams on a collegiate level. The Hall of Fame touches virtually every household in Michigan. By recent estimates, there are more than 1.5 million persons of various disabilities in the state of Michigan alone. By reaching out through sports, the Hall of Fame transcends age, race, gender and ability, offering a dynamic opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people in every community. This is an invitation to join our team... |
