Walter Runchey2006 Hall of Fame Inductee Walt Runchey devoted his life to his family, his community, and his country. Walt suffered a spinal cord injury in 1969, but rather than succumb to that tragedy, he used his competitive spirit to create new opportunities for persons with disabilities, paving the way for future generations. For nearly two decades, Runchey was a member of the Ann Arbor Wheelchair Sports Team. He was an excellent bowler, once finishing as high as fourth in a national bowling tournament, but where Runchey truly excelled was as a leader for the track and field squad. He was a regular participant in the Michigan Wheelchair Games, and he was a formidable competitor, particularly during the 1980's. A team captain for nearly 17 years, Runchey was a guiding force for the team's younger and less-experienced athletes. Runchey devoted his time and efforts to his hometown of Garden City, and to an organization he loved dearly -- the Michigan Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He served as a longtime mentor in the Garden City youth program, and the city presented a certificate of appreciation to Walt for his outstanding community service. Walt's contributions to the Michigan PVA were even more significant. He was a nominee for Michigan Veteran of the Year, and he was recipient of the Michigan 's Meritorious Service Award. From 1982 to 1984, Runchey served as President of the Michigan PVA, and upon his installation as President, a Resolution was introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives in recognition of Walt Runchey's "dedication to preserving the rights and privileges" of persons with disabilities. |
